Workshop - Musical Comedy with Harriet Braine and We Are Funny

  • Farrs school of dancing 17 Dalston Lane London, England, E8 3BG United Kingdom (map)

This one day Workshop is designed to help newer comedians find their way into writing and performing musical comedy, or, for those already doing it, aid in developing ways to improve the performance.

Each student will receive a guaranteed spot with We Are Funny Project so that they can apply some of what will have been learned on this fun, funny and fact-filled day.

The £65 "Early Bird" tickets are available until 11pm Monday September 30th. Thereafter, the price increases to £75.

"If you like musical comedy with a twist, Harriet will have you howling" Metro

"Her lyrics were truly inspired" Bruce Dessau

"Fairly niche" Stylist Magazine

Harriet uses a guitar, but all kinds of instruments and styles are welcomed, as the principles are universal.

This workshop will cover:

- Listening. First we will wrap our ears round different examples and styles of musical comedy.

- Thinking. Then we'll talk about style and tone and get ideas flowing using games and improvisation, in groups of different sizes.

- Writing. Some time will be dedicated as individuals or small groups to writing a song (or joke, or short set with a musical aspect) to present to the group.

- Exercising. Before presenting our songs to the group, we will warm up using vocal exercises (and more games!).

- Performing. This is a chance to see how writing and performance can fit together, as each song or bit is presented to the group.

- Judging. No, not really, just a chance to give each other constructive feedback on the performances.

Harriet Braine is a multi-award-winning musical comedian, known for her parody songs about famous artists. Her debut show 'Total Eclipse of the Art' was a finalist in the Amused Moose Comedy Award in 2017, and for 2019 she is pushing the boat out and writing a show full of original songs about women from history, inspired by the History Makers Podcast she co-presents with Bec Hill and Dr Lucy Rogers.
